Benedict Cumberbatch will lead the cast of a new adaptation of ‘The thirty-nine steps’, the novel by John Buchan that was already made into a film in 1935 by Alfred Hitchcock in a famous movie starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

An adaptation this time in the form of a miniseries that will be produced by Chapter One Pictures, SunnyMarch TV and Anonymous Content, the company responsible for ‘Maniac’, ‘Homecoming’ or ‘Defend Jacob’ which in turn will be in charge of presenting the project to the different North American chains and streaming services.

‘The thirty-nine steps’ is an espionage novel that takes place in England, months before World War I. A young man randomly discovers a conspiracy aimed at weakening the naval power of the British Empire, and is hunted through Scotland by traitors, who want to seize the compromising evidence.

Mark L. Smith (‘The Revenant’, ‘Overlord’) will be the creator and scriptwriter of this new version that will be directed entirely by Edward Berger, responsible for the first three episodes of the ‘Your Honor’ starring Bryan Cranston and previously worked with Cumberbatch on ‘Patrick Melrose’.
