ATP Washington 2021: De Miñaur and Dimitrov fall on an unfortunate day for the favorites

Day of many games that we have lived in the ATP Washington 2021. Several of the title favorites and top seeds began their journey in the American capital … and not many of them took that first step with force. The first to fall was Alex de Miñaur, back on the circuit after overcoming COVID-19, which yielded in three rounds in his debut against Steve Johnson (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2). Another we hadn’t seen since Wimbledon was Grigor dimitrov: the Bulgarian showed a very bad version, chaining some very strange points in the decisive moments of the match, to return to the courts with a resounding defeat against Ilya Ivashka (6-2, 7-6 (4)).

The positive and beautiful note of the day put her MacKenzie McDonald. The American tennis player confirmed his return to the top-100 this morning. He did it, in addition, starring in a great comeback against a motivated Benoit Paire, who could not hide his frustration after losing a very fought duel (6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4). In 2019, McDonald suffered a severe hamstring injury that prevented him from walking for a month and a half and he left a significant scar near the abdominal area: today, he returns to the place where he was then.

Other results of the day (second round matches):

Jannik Sinner (5) d. Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 6-4

Brandon Nakashima (WC) d. Daniel Evans (6) 7-6 (1), 6-0

Reilly Opelka (8) d. Daniel Elahi Galán 7-6 (1), 6-3

Kei Nishikori d. Alexander Bublik (9) 6-2, 7-5

Denis Kudla d. Taylor Fritz (10) 6-4, 6-2

John Millman (11) d. Elias Ymer (Q) 6-2, 7-6 (8)

Lloyd Harris (14) d. Tennys Sandgren 6-4, 1-0 Ret.
