Madrid. Diego Simeone finally beat Barcelona in a league duel and dealt a hard blow to Barça’s aspirations in the fight for the title. Atlético de Madrid extends its unbeaten streak to 24 league games and has not lost on its home court, Wanda Metropolitano, since December 1, 2019, precisely against Barça (1-0).
The Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco defined a counterattack so that the rojiblanco team beat a 1-0 Barcelona that is not recovering from the recent crisis. This was the first victory in the League for the colchoneros over the Catalans since February 14, 2010, when they won 2-1. The Madridistas did not have their top scorer, the Uruguayan Luis Suárez, who tested positive for Covid-19, or the injured Mexican Héctor Herrera.
The Argentine striker Ángel Correa recovered the ball, after a bad reception from Gerard Piqué, and launched Carrasco, who crossed the midfield line, took off goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen, who came out desperate, and defined by a long shot with an open arc in the last action of the first half.
Atlético extended its unbeaten streak to 24 league games – counting the last tournament – and ranks second with 20 points and two games pending. Barcelona got stuck again to be tenth with 11 units on matchday 10 of the season.
For the Argentine coach Diego Simeone, the wait to beat Barcelona is over. They got it until their 18th league duel (one win, six draws and 11 losses).
Argentine Lionel Messi came close to scoring in the final stretch of the first half, but the ball was saved by Jan Oblak.
And there was more bad news for Barça in the complement, when Piqué had to leave the field due to a right knee injury at 60 minutes.
The other big one, Real Madrid, suffered with a team decimated by injuries and Covid-19 infections to tie in his visit to Villarreal.
The Yellow Submarine failed to reflect a clear superiority in the second half and left the score at 1-1 against the champion, who did not have several starters. Spanish-Dominican striker Mariano Díaz put the meringues ahead with a header after a cross from Dani Carvajal in the second minute.
Gerard Moreno matched via the penalty, after a foul committed by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on Nigerian midfielder Samuel Chukwueze at 76.
On the other hand, Sevilla had the ability to react to come back and beat Celta de Vigo 4-2, where Mexican Néstor Araujo entered the field at minute 42.
