Over the last few weeks we have already heard reports that assured the good performance of the iPhone 12, and now Gartner has been commissioned to confirm it. Apple overtook Samsung as the brand that sold the most smartphones in a quarter for the first time in 4 years.
The design of the iPhone 12
Previous analysis firms such as IDC already showed this “surprise” from Apple to Samsung in the last quarter of 2021, and now Gartner confirms it again, although with somewhat lower figures. According to the new data, Apple would have sold almost 80 million iPhones last quarter, representing a year-on-year growth of 14.9%.
On the other hand, Samsung has seen its smartphone sales decrease by 11.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. Furthermore, compared to the global figures for all of 2020, Apple has managed to grow in sales, while Samsung and the global market fall.
The launch of the iPhone 12 series helped Apple post double-digit growth in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple overtook Samsung to retake the No. 1 spot as a global smartphone vendor. The last time Apple was the top smartphone supplier was in the fourth quarter of 2016

Apple grows in a shrinking market
Apple’s merit is twofold. On the one hand manages to grow in a global market that fell 5.4% in the last quarter of 2020, and 12.5% in the total of 2020.
And on the other, let’s remember that Apple competes only with mid-range and high-end devices, which exceed $ 400 in price. The best-selling smartphones of the rest of the companies do not exceed $ 300.
Smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2020
As we can see in the data collected in this table, Apple stayed very close to the 80 million iPhones sold. This means that 10 million more iPhones were sold in the last quarter of 2020 than in the last quarter of 2019.
Samsung for its part sold only 62 million smartphones, falling almost 12% compared to the sales it had in the same period of 2019. On the other hand, Huawei continues to fall and Xiaomi and Oppo take advantage of it.
If you look at the global smartphone market sales for the entire year, Apple may be happy too. The market fell 12.5% in 2020, but Apple has sold 3.3% more, staying very close to the 200 million iPhone sold. Samsung falls no less than 14%, and after almost reaching 300 million smartphones in 2019, it is left with just over 250 in 2020.
Smartphone sales in 2020
As we can see, practically all companies except Apple and Xiaomi have sold less in 2020. These are important data that must be valued, since in a falling market, Apple has managed to attract many users. Let’s see if these good sales figures continue in 2021.
