Anya Taylor-Joy: Meet her upcoming movies

With the resounding success of the Netflix miniseries Lady’s gambit —Seen in approximately 62 million households— there is no doubt that Anya Taylor-Joy is the actress of the moment. In the role of chess player Beth Harmon, the 24-year-old actor reaffirmed the enormous talent that we had already witnessed since her film debut in The Witch (2015) and now we are impatient to know the upcoming film titles that show off the BAFTA nominee within of its cast.

Last Night in Soho (Dir. Edgar Wright) – In post-production

In early 2019, Anya Taylor-Joy was one of the confirmed actresses for Edgar Wright’s new movie, after Baby Driver (2017). Under the title Last Night in Soho, since then there has been talk of a project within the genres of thriller and psychological horror, with a cast complemented by Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit).

Inspired by great British classics such as Don’t Look Now (1973) and Repulsion (1965), Wright wrote a script about a young fashionista who, by chance, travels back in time to the 60s. to his idol, a « dazzling aspiring singer », in a London that could host catastrophic mysteries. Filming for Last Night in Soho began in May 2019 and culminated in August of the same year. Its premiere (postponed more than six months due to COVID) is scheduled for April 23, 2021.

The Northman (Dir. Robert Eggers) – In filming

At the end of 2019, the first members of the exquisite cast of The Northman were confirmed. It was then known that Anya Taylor-Joy would meet again with the director of The Witch (2015), Robert Eggers, in the company of the famous Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe.

Set in the 10th century, The Northman will tell the story of a Viking prince who seeks to avenge his father’s death. With a script co-written by Eggers and Icelandic Sjón Sigurdsson, the film began filming in August 2020, also featuring Ethan Hawke and Björk as part of the cast. To date, it is unknown when this feature film intends to hit the big screen.

A couple of weeks ago, Taylor-Joy – whose character in this film is still unknown – said that the new project of the also director of El Faro (2019) will present something that the world « has not really seen before. »

Mad Max Spin-off on Furiosa (Dir. George Miller) – In pre-production

In October 2020, media reported that Anya Taylor-Joy would star in the highly anticipated Mad Max spin-off: Fury Road (2015). It was said that Warner Bros. was well advanced in the development of the project and that the actress of Glass and The New Mutants would play a young Furiosa, in the years before she became the renegade captain of the tyrannical Immortan Joe. At the same time, it was revealed that Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were confirmed members of the cast, although their roles are still unknown.

The character of Imperator Furiosa debuted in that last film in the Mad Max franchise, memorably played by Charlize Theron. After making her signing official, Taylor-Joy said that her version of the warrior must be different from the « incredible » and « beautiful » work done by her South African counterpart.

George Miller serves as director, co-writer and producer of the spin-off, in complicity with his recurring collaborator Doug Mitchell, who also produced the acclaimed Fury Road. There is still no tentative release date nor is it known when filming will begin.

Weetzie Bat (Dir. Justin Kelly) – Announced

In mid-2018, Deadline dropped the exclusive that Anya Taylor-Joy would star in Weetzie Bat, feature film based on the homonymous novel by the North American Francesca Lia Block, published in 1989. At that time, the project already had Justin Kelly (I Am Michael) in the director’s chair, and a cast complemented by Nick Robinson (Love , Simon), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Theodore Pellerin (Boy Erased) and Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash). However, after more than two years, there is still no indication that the pre-production of the film is close to starting.

On the plot, Weetzie (Taylor-Joy) is the daughter of an alcoholic woman and a screenwriter with addiction problems, who lives in Los Angeles in the 80s. In complicity with her best friend Dirk (Pellerin), she goes out into the world in in search of love and happiness, but soon becomes familiar with the darker side of the Californian city.

The Sea Change (Dir. Kristin Scott Thomas) – Announced

In February 2017, Deadline reported that Anya Taylor-Joy was in talks to land a role in Kristin Scott Thomas’ debut feature, The Sea Change. The film would be based on the homonymous novel by the British Elizabeth Jane Howard, published in 1959. It would tell the story of a London couple formed by the successful playwright Emmanuel and his wife Lillian (Scott Thomas) who travel to a remote Greek island where they meet a curious young woman named Alberta (Taylor-Joy), who helps them overcome a long-lived marriage crisis.

Nothing new about the project has emerged since then, although Scott Thomas (at the time) made it clear how important it was for her to perform not only as an actress but also as a director.

« I want to make a film to continue my career as a storyteller, » she declared (via). «The Sea Change raises a question that I have tried to answer in many of my performances: what are the reasons for the emotions and difficulties of love? I want to make a film that has depth, humor and beauty.

Nosferatu Remake (Dir. Robert Eggers) – On indefinite hiatus

Five years ago, it was announced that Eggers – who had just released his acclaimed debut feature The Witch – would be in charge of writing and directing a remake of the vampire classic. Nosferatu (1922), in complicity with the production house Studio 8. Anya Taylor-Joy was considered to play Ellen Hutter, love interest of the fanged, and even in 2017 it was reported that the actor was already in talks to join the project. Unfortunately no progress has been reported in recent years, but the director does not intend to give up his plans.

At the end of 2019, in an interview with Den of Geek, Eggers stated the following regarding his Nosferatu remake: “I spent so many years and so much time [preparándolo], I poured a lot of blood on it [que] It would be a real shame if it never happened.
