On August 13 in Marbella, the four-time champion of Spain and two-time European featherweight champion, Andoni Gago (24-3-4, 7 KO), will make the second defense of the continental title that he achieved in June 2019 against Madrid Jesus Sanchez, and retained before the English Gavin mcdonnell last April, after making a technical null.
The 36-year-old from Biscay will fight the former European champion Karim Guerfi (29-5, 9 KOs), 34, one-time French flyweight champion and four-time European bantamweight champion.
Last March he lost his title in the first round to a Scottish whirlwind called Lee McGregor.
Now Guerfi rises to featherweight and will try to proclaim himself champion in a new category.
To date, five Basques have been European champions. Paulino Uzcudun, three times in heavyweight (1926, 1928 and 1933), José Manuel Ibar «Urtain», three times at heavyweight (1970 and 1971), Agustin Senin, three times at the bantamweight (1971 and 1972), Kerman Lejarraga, twice at welterweight (2018) and Andoni Gago, twice at featherweight (2019 and 2020).
For this reason, Gago, with a third title, would enter the club of the three-time Basque champions, together with Uzcudun, Urtain and Senín, a historic award for which the Biscayan will fight to the full.
