If you are looking for a way to learn a new language and do not want to go through the classic courses, academies or applications, you may be interested in taking a look at a new platform: Toucan.
Is about a free tool that we can use via Google Chrome by installing its extension. Toucan proposes us to learn while we surf the Internet, introducing us words of the language we have chosen while we read any page.
“Our free Google Chrome extension helps you learn without having to spend time creating a new habit. Toucan immerses you in the language while browsing the web. What’s even better is that you’ll see those words in the context of phrases , helping your brain connect the word with its useful meaning. “
An “immersive” method and with which to learn little by little
First of all, after installing the extension, it will be choose from the available languages. Currently there are six: Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese. We will see an article as an example, in which some words are marked in blue.
We will have to grant permission to extension to analyze the pages we are browsing and, finally, create a free account in Toucan to keep track of our progress.
I have chosen Portuguese, and we will see that in this presentation article (written in English) some words appear in blue in Portuguese. If we put the mouse over it, the word will appear in the original language of that article (English, in this case) and even a button that allows us to hear how it is pronounced.
If we go to the extension settings, we will see that they allow us to choose the amount of translations that we want to appear (few, more or many) or if we prefer to deactivate it on certain pages.
Another important section is the Dashboard, in which they show us the total number of words that have been translated using this tool and below a selection of packs that we can install.
These packs will help us improve vocabulary “in a bar”, “at a party” or “to start the morning”. Most are free, although there are some packs that we can only use if we unlock in a premium plan (which costs $ 5.99 per month).
“Packs” with words for all kinds of situations
At first it can become strange to see words from another language entered in the middle of the text and marked with another color, but after using it for a while you end up getting used to it.
Example reading The Guardian
I have tried using it (reminder: I chose Portuguese) and it has worked correctly with articles or pages written in both Spanish and English, integrating Portuguese words in between.
