In a 2018 interview with Stuff, the beauty queen said she was teased by her classmates while growing up in Auckland. They called her “Chimoan” because of her “slanted eyes” and “tanned skin.” Amber is half Samoan on her father’s family side and her grandmother is a boss in Savai’i.
Friis also revealed that she had a less than ideal education. He had moved about 13 times when he was 15, remembering nights when there was not enough food for dinner. She said, “I remember sitting in my room one night and thinking about how difficult life could be. At a young age, you feel like the world is weighing on your shoulders. ”
At age 15, Friis moved in with her boyfriend. While studying to be a mechanic, she worked at Pizza Hut three nights a week. Amber said that during that time, she gained a lot of weight. “I had a negative outlook on everything. I imagined myself as an angry old woman, fat and old, but then I thought: this is not what I want to be. ”
Friis told Stuff that after turning 18, he moved into a caravan on his uncle and aunt’s property. “They helped me set goals and showed me that I could do anything,” he said.
While working at an online advertising company, you were able to save enough money to buy a car and sign up with a coach at the gym. His coach said, “If you’re burning, it’s not working,” and in six months, he lost much of the previously gained weight. “I thought, I’m not going to do anything that an international supermodel wouldn’t do.”
After receiving a message on Instagram asking if she was interested in competing in the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant, Friis thought it was a scam. Due to his tattoos and the expandable in his ears, he didn’t even think he could qualify to compete. But realizing it was a legitimate request, he decided to give himself a chance.
In May 2018, Friis learned that she was chosen as one of the Top 20 Finalists to compete for the title in Auckland. “I couldn’t stop screaming and crying,” he said. “It was the best thing in history.” She was credited with entering the contest to change her outlook on life.
“It was like a lost sheep before I started writing goals and started focusing on what I wanted to do,” he said. “I felt trapped and helpless. No one has to feel this way. I want to help young women see their potential and establish a life plan to achieve it. “
Nigel Godfrey, director of the Miss World New Zealand competition, visited her Facebook page to write an emotional tribute to Friis.
He shared: “A couple of years ago, when we were doing the contest, Amber-Lee Friis entered our lives, she was a force to be reckoned with. This was one of the many international stories it generated after entering, and it is very sad to read it now. She was a fighter, she was definitely a beautiful soul and you knew 100% what you received, “continued Godfrey. “She was genuine, honest, and had an energy that few possessed, her heart was definitely in the right place. We liked and respected her and were very proud to call her friend long after the competition was over. ”
