Räikkönen: “The problem was a surprise, there was no warning”
Giovinazzi: “I am happy with today’s result”
The team has been fined 5,000 euros for the Kimi incident
Alfa Romeo had a bittersweet Sunday at the Austrian Grand Prix, the inaugural event of the 2020 Formula 1 season. On the one hand, Antonio Giovinazzi has achieved the first two points of the year with ninth position; on the other, Kimi Räikkönen has been forced to leave due to a problem with a wheel – she was fired without prior notice – and the team has been fined 5,000 euros. The positive part of the weekend is that the pace of the car has been better than expected, especially given the qualifying performance.
Kimi raikkonen (RET):
“It is a shame to finish the race like this when things were going well. Compared to yesterday, we had taken a step forward and had a reasonable speed. The moment of the first safety car has cost us positions, but we were still in a good position and with new tires I could have struggled for some points. Unfortunately, we had to withdraw: the problem was a surprise, there was no warning that it would happen. We will have to investigate what has happened. For now, we can get some positive aspects of our pace in race conditions and continue to improve the car. ”
Antonio Giovinazzi (9th):
“I am very happy with the result today. After our difficult classification yesterday, reaching the points is the best we could do. The race was not easy, we had problems at the start, but we have become strong as we did. The race was progressing. Of course, in such a chaotic race you need a bit of luck, but we were ready to take advantage of any opportunity. We fought and in the end the ninth position is a great way to start the season. I am very happy for the guys and girls from the garage and the ones at home. There is still a lot to improve, but it is only the first race of the season, there is a lot of time. I am already looking forward to going back to the car next week “.
Frédéric Vasseur, team leader:
“Getting points in the season opener is always a good thing, but there are more positive things, not just the result. Our race pace has been a step forward since yesterday, we have been able to extract more of the potential of the C39. As a team, we’ve kept a cool head during the rollercoaster ride that has been and bringing points home is a good reward for all the work of this race. It was a shame to lose Kimi this way but we will investigate the problem and make sure to be able to fight for a top 10 spot with both cars next week. ”
