Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the Xunta de Galicia, This Wednesday he went to the factory of the PSA group (Peugeot-Citroën) in Vigo to highlight the importance of strengthening its competitiveness. The plant has started the activity after being stopped for two months due to the coronavirus crisis

Feijóo has visited the Balaídos factory together with the Minister for the Economy, Emprego and Industry, Francisco Conde, and they have indicated that, together with the management of the factory, they seek to “make it the most competitive in the group” after the covid 19.

The PSA plant in Vigo resumed its activity two weeks ago after the ‘hiatus’ caused by the health emergency and it is expected that, from June 1, the third shift will start work.

For its reactivation, a security protocol with preventive measures was activated to minimize the risk of contagion in the workforce. Some measures that were coordinated with the auxiliary industry, and with the Galician administration, through the advice of the Instituto de Seguridade e Saúde Laboral de Galicia (ISSGA).

Macron’s plan

Feijóo and Conde’s visit comes just hours after the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, had announced a national plan to rescue the automotive industry in that country, endowed with 8,000 million and conditioned, among other aspects, that the Major builders (PSA and Renault) relocate the production of ‘green’, electric and hybrid vehicles to France.

At the Vigo plant, an electric version of the new model, Peugeot 2008, is produced, in addition to the K9 project electric vans. Furthermore, it had been announced that, starting in 2021, electrification would be extended to all commercial vehicle models.

In fact, Xunta and PSA Vigo are pending the signing of a collaboration agreement for the contribution, by the autonomous administration, of 5 million euros for the development of 100% electric vehicles.

The Galician government has recalled that the community is a “world reference” in this type of vehicle and in the autonomous vehicle, both due to the activity of PSA and the auxiliary industry. In addition, it has influenced, the multinational participates in initiatives “that contribute to the revitalization of the sector”, such as the Business Factory Auto or the “hub” of digital innovation promoted by the Galician automotive cluster (CEAGA).
