There are several types of lunar eclipses, which is when the shadow of the Earth is projected in two parts: the umbra (shadow) and the penumbra. In the umbra there is no direct solar radiation.
But due to the larger angular size of the Sun, radiation is only partially blocked in the outer portion of the Earth’s shadow, which is called penumbra.
According to the different shadows, there are three types of lunar eclipses:
Penumbral eclipse (like the one this Monday), which occurs when the Moon passes through a terrestrial penumbra and then a subtle darkening occurs on the lunar surface.
Partial eclipse: when only part of the Moon enters the umbra.
Total eclipse: when the entire Moon enters the threshold zone.
