María de los Ángeles Arriola, Director of Migrations, told 730 AM radio that she has been working with the Minister of the Interior, Euclides Acevedo, for a long time on a protocol for the reopening of the borders between Paraguay and Brazil, and that this was done consideration of the Ministry of Public Health, which in turn made its position known to President Mario Abdo Benítez.

He clarified that in this case a temporary and partial opening is evaluated, making constant evaluations regarding effectiveness. In principle, the reopening of all the borders of Paraguay with Brazil is contemplated, but it will depend on the number of personnel that Migrations, Ports, Customs and other institutions that are located in the primary zones have, in addition to the agreement that is concluded with the neighboring country .

“We must not leave any loose ends. If this doesn’t work, we’re going to have to close back. If it goes off or can’t be controlled at some point, we’re going to have to shut down. If it works in the first week, the number of buyers that will be able to enter can be increased in the second, ”he argued.

Arriola indicated that it is still necessary to define the number of people who will be able to enter, the hours of stay, how the sanitary cordon will be done, immigration control, how it will be done to avoid crowding and sanctions for those who do not comply with the protocol. However, he exemplified that foreigners could enter the country from 05:00 to 10:00 in the morning and could be until 18:00 to do their shopping. It is being evaluated to initially allow the entry of 500 Brazilians to the country per day.

The head of Migrations pointed out that there is still a need to talk with the local authorities of both countries to close the agreement. He added that the reopening will not take place in the near future, but will be soon.

At another time, he announced that to speed up the crossing of the border, his institution plans to hold a tender for the acquisition of technology, such as a totem with facial recognition cameras and other devices to identify vehicles, such as motorcycle taxi drivers, so that the technology recognizes them and they can pass freely without having to register in Migrations each time.

Regarding the airport, he said that by the end of September it is possible to discuss whether it is feasible to enable return for international flights. « We are all anxious and we will see if the bubble flight implemented with Uruguay now turns out, » he added.

For his part, the mayor of Ciudad del Este, Miguel Prieto, said that today he learned about the sanitary protocol for the partial reopening of the Friendship Bridge for the reactivation of the economy.

The local authority said that locals are looking forward to foreigners to reactivate the economy. « Although many people are on . of collapse, the fact of being able to receive buyers again, that is going to help a lot, » he said.

He also stressed that it is good news that Brazil has approved the purchase quota of $ 500 without paying tax.
